Turkish Cultural Foundation’s Culinary Arts Center is preparing four exciting culinary cultural tours for the year 2017. The tours will start with “Grape Route of İzmir” in March and “Asparagus Harvest and Eskişehir Culinary Tour” will take place in the beginning of April. In these themed culinary tours we will explore the local products of the places visited as well as explore the local dishes, accompanied by experts in their fields. Turkish cooking traditions are highlighted every month with the YESAM Recipe of the Month, this month features a recipe of “Bulgur Rice Pilaf with Chestnuts”.
Dr. Recep Karadağ of the TCF Cultural Preservation and Natural Dyes Laboratory-DATU participated in the 2nd International Conference on Art & Archaeology 2016: Art and Archaeology Strengthened by Measurement Techniques in Jerusalem from December 11-14, 2016. At the conference, he gave an oral presentation entitled “Resin Analysis in the Yenikapı Byzantine-Era Shipwreck”. Dr. Karadağ also participated in the Occupational Competency and Title Definitions Workshop in the Field of Conservation and Restoration sponsored by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Istanbul on December 8-10, 2016.
Makam New York's program Turkish Story Time, supported by a TCF grant, continues to present weekly programs in New York City. Turkish Story Time brings children and their caregivers together to learn about Turkish culture through reading stories in Turkish, learning songs, rhymes, and riddles, introducing instruments and advancing literacy. The program is recorded the first Saturday of every month at 4:00 pm at Book Culture on Columbus in New York City and is open to the public. The recordings, stories and materials are available on Makam New York’s website.
Media artist Refik Anadol's (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2013) art project "Infinity Room" won the German Design Award for Excellent Communications Design. He will be featured as part of the German Design Award’s exhibition at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main in 2017. Anadol’s digital artwork has been displayed in exhibitions and projected on public buildings all over the world including in Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Montreal, Geneva, Brussels, Herford, Sydney, and Istanbul.
Glass artist Agâh Barış Can Aksakal and Hale Feriha Hendekcigil (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellows -2014) will be featured in the "Genç Doku" exhibition at Glasst Gallery in İstanbul, on Saturday, December 24, 2016, along with 15 participating glass artists. The exhibition remains open until January 6, 2017.
Dr. Mehmet Sanlıkol (TCF Academic Fellow 2013) was featured in the January 2017 issue of “DownBeat”, a monthly magazine dedicated to “jazz, blues, and beyond”.
Ceramist İpek Kotan (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow 2014 and 2016) exhibited her work in the Nathalie Doyen & Ipek Kotan Exhibition at the Puls Contemporary Ceramics Gallery in Brussels from November 19-December 22, 2016.
Dr. Elif Mahir Metinsoy (TCF Academic Fellow 2013) presented her paper entitled “Ordinary Women's Everyday Politics During the Fall of the Ottoman Empire” at the Second Symposium of the Consortium for European Symposia (CEST): Politics from Below in Turkey and Beyond, which took place in Paris on December 1, 2016.
Dr. Maximilian Hartmuth (TCF Academic Fellow 2012) contributed to the publication “Christian Art Under Muslim Rule: Proceedings of a Workshop Held in Istanbul on May 11/12 2012” by the Netherlands Institute for the Near East with the paper entitled “The Challenge of Rebuilding a Catholic Monastery in Ottoman Bosnia in 1767.”
Dr. Lilyana Stankova (TCF Academic Fellow 2013) contributed to the publication “Christian Art Under Muslim Rule: Proceedings of a Workshop Held in Istanbul on May 11/12 2012” by the Netherlands Institute for the Near East with the paper entitled “Tradition and Innovation in the Decorative Practices in Christian Arts in the Balkans, Fifteenth through Seventeenth Centuries.”
