Turkish Story Time Program

Makam New York’s program Turkish Story Time, supported by a TCF grant, continues to present weekly programs in New York City. Turkish Story Time brings children and their caregivers together to learn about Turkish culture through reading stories in Turkish, learning songs, rhymes, and riddles, introducing instruments and advancing literacy. The program is recorded the first Saturday of every month at 4:00 pm at Book Culture on Columbus in New York City and is open to the public. The recordings, stories and materials are available on Makam New York’s website.

TCF Fellows Update

Glass sculptor Agâh Barış Can Aksakal (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2017) participated in ‘Cities of Glass’, a symposium led by the National Glass Museum of Leerdam in Holland. Artists from Turkey, Italy, Holland, the Czech Republic, Romania participated in the symposium. Aksakal represented Turkey and the Turkish contemporary glass art community at the event for two weeks from June 24 - July 9.

Interdisciplinary artist Meichen Waxer (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2015), an MAA student at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, completed a residency at the Anvil Centre in New Westminister, Canada in July.

Performance artist Sena Başöz (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2014) is participating in the Cite Internationale des Arts residency program in Paris, France from July through September.

Composer Hakan Ulus (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2014) performed the world premiere of "Precious Liquids" (2017) for clarinet, violin, viola, and violoncello at Ensemble intercontemporain, ManiFeste Acad in Paris, France on July 1. He also performed “Üç Zamanlarin Grupları“ for clarinet, violoncello, and piano in Tolstefanz, Germany on July 21.

Grammy nominated composer, singer, performer and scholar Dr. Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2012 and Grantee-2017) gave a concert series as “Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol & Whatsnext? featuring Tiger Okoshi” at Ryles Jazz Club in Boston on July 6; Zorlu Performing Arts Center in Istanbul, Turkey on July 13; Reşat Oyal Kültür Parkı Açık Hava Tiyatrosu in Bursa, Turkey on July 16; and Othello Castle in Famagusta, Cyprus on July 18.

Dr. Hasan Çolak (TCF Academic Fellow-2010) participated in a workshop on “Protégés of the Dutch, subjects of the Ottomans, beneficiaries of the Russians, and supporters of Greek nationalism: Identity Issues of Ottoman Greeks in Amsterdam” at a conference at The School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris, France on July 8. Dr. Colak also spoke at a panel on the “Interaction between Islamic and Canon Law: Testimony of Ottoman appointment documents for Orthodox patriarchs” at a conference on Jews, Christians, and Muslims in the Reformation Era at Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnberg, Germany between July 18-21.

Cellist, composer, improviser, and photographer Anıl Eraslan (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow-2014) held a concert with Aksakal at Donau115 in Berlin, Germany on July 12. He also performed with the Lucia de Carvalho Band at the 25th Annual International Samba Festival in Coburg, Germany on July 15.

Jazz musician Ferit Odman (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellows-2012), performed with the Ferit Odman Quintet at Nardis Jazz Club in İstanbul, Turkey on July 13.

Dancer İdris Ersan Küçük (TCF Cultural Exchange Fellows-2015), participated in the 44th International Council for Traditional Music - ICTM World Conference in ‘Dance As A Text: East Black Sea Region Dances’ at the Irish World Academy, University of Limerick in Limerick, Ireland between July 13-19.

Nikolas Vryzidis (TCF Academic Fellow-2011) participated in the 14th International Congress of Ottoman Social and Economic History (ICOSEH) with a paper entitled “Ottoman textiles in Greek sacristies: remnants of a social context” at Sofia University in Sofia, Bulgaria from July 24-28.

Dr. Özgen Felek  (TCF Academic Fellow-2008) presented a paper entitled "Manhood, Masculinity, and the Male Body as Enacted in Early Modern Ottoman Physiognomy Texts: The Case of Risale-i Kiyaset-i Firaset and Kıyafetu’l-insaniyye" at the ‘International Colloquium New Perspectives in Gender Studies: Islamic Masculinities Past and Present’ conference at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain on July 31.
